Introduction to Seasons of the Spirit
Seasons of the Spirit provides lectionary-based resources for worship, Christian education, and ministries of serving. These resources nurture faith through liturgy, ritual, imagination, and encourage Christian growth through worshipping, learning, and serving together. By equipping and enabling leaders, Seasons of the Spirit strives to empower children, youth, and adults to articulate “the hope that is in them.”
Our vision is of an authentic Christianity lived in a culturally diverse and religiously pluralistic world.
We offer resources that encourage leaders and participants to be signs of God’s liberating compassion and inclusive love, and to grow and be transformed in their relationship with Christ, God, and others.
Seasons of the Spirit resources are developed collaboratively within an international and ecumenical group of writers, editors, and resource people, using the spirit of discernment, community exploration of biblical texts and current scholarship, and engagement with arts and technology.
The Seasons of the Spirit Theological and Educational Foundations Paper was drafted collaboratively and has guided the project since 1998. The vision of Seasons of the Spirit is that each section of the resource:
- nurtures faith by engaging the imagination through the Bible, tradition, science, technology, and the arts;
- engages responsibly and creatively the contemporary teaching and learning environment of Christian congregations and parishes;
- sends us into the contemporary world with its current events, issues, knowledge, and discoveries acting as an arena to test, share, and live out our faith;
- invites us to explore meaning and mystery in the Bible through the lectionary;
- encourages us to experience the transforming power of Christ as together worship, sacraments, and education work in our lives;
- calls us into the ecumenical, global, and inclusive heart of the church where these resources are grounded and shaped.

Session Flow
Woven into each weekly session of the Seasons of the Spirit resources is the liturgical rhythm of a worship flow to learning. The session material guides the leader from initial preparation through the session itself and into a time of reflection. Through gathering, engaging, responding, and blessing, participants experience practices central to the faith tradition.
Sessions are written with a 40-minute time frame in mind, and can be extended to a 60-minute session by incorporating more discussion time during the “Engage” section and offering more options during the “Respond” time.
